With the passage of Paul Newman, it’s difficult for anyone “into” watches to not think at least a bit about the mythical association between the great actor and the coveted vintage Rolex Daytonas, such as the Ref. 6241 and the 6263. According to Rolex authority John Brozek, there is much controversy over which so-called “exotic dial” Daytona Newman actually wore, where he first appeared wearing it (i.e. the 1969 film “Winning”), and just how collectors came to connect this timepiece so much with the man. However, this much was certainly clear: Mr. Newman enjoyed wearing the Rolex Daytona watch. Beginning with a black-dialed example with contrasting white registers given to him by wife Joanne Woodward in 1972, Newman was often seen over the decades with some form of this Rolex classic on his wrist–usually upon a military-type “Bund” leather strap.
