The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso – Extraordinary Art Deco Icon Lives On

It never ceases to amaze me how many utterly gorgeous and appealing variations can be derived from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s iconic Reverso watch. First introduced 1931 for the polo playing contingency (who delighted in the reversible case which protected the crystal), this timepiece has gone on through the decades to become synonymous with Jaeger-LeCoultre. Simple or complex, mens or ladies, dressy or sporty, this IS the watch that comes to mind when this venerable house’s name is spoken.
The breadth of this line is extraordinary. The Reverso watch has gone on to support every manner of complication, including even the most virtuoso—the minute repeater, and the tourbillon. It has also been the recipient of truly extraordinary gem-setting, and its Art Deco form supports such glories of the jewellery arts superbly. And, then there is the extraordinary Reverso Email watches, whose backs display the extraordinary enamel paintings of miniature enamel master, Miklos Merczel–if you have not seen these, you are in for a true treat! Almost anything that can be envisioned in the mind’s eye can be realized in these truly custom masterpieces.
The Reverso also makes a wonderfully elegant sports timepiece, too–the recent expansion of the acclaimed Reverso Squadra watch collection demonstrates this superbly, particularly with the extremely neat Reverso Squadra World Chronograph, with its chronograph function on one side, and a rotating world time display on the other.
Picking a favorite from this line is really, really tough. Personally, I would probably go with either the Reverso Grande Sun Moon watch (the watch pictured above), because I love the classic moon phase indicator, or the Reverso Grande GMT, because dual-timezone watches are so handy, and this is such a useful and appealing complication. Both of these timepieces give you a beautifully crafted 8-day manual wind movement, naturally manufactured by Jaeger-LeCoultre.
What is YOUR favorite Reverso watch? I’d love to hear your opinions.

Well, I adore the Reverso a Eclipse watch becuase of the miniature enamel painting. I am in complete awe of someone who can paint such a detailed, tiny painting on such a small surface. True talent and genius! I also like the Reverso Squadra World Chronograph atch its big square case shape, contrasting black dial and white hands and square shaped sub-dials with red details. My one question about this watch is the color of the hands. I think the white hands get lost in the busy dial and the white hour markers. I imagine them as being blue, and I wonder, ‘would it look better? or even more busy, and perhaps worse?’ I have not decided yet.

This is such a hard decision. I think I’m gonna go with the Reverso Joaillerie Duetto because they come in a variety of straps. The leather straps are great, but I think my favorite is the classic. Stainless steel with diamonds of course!
