Girard-Perregaux has impressed me with a beautiful new addition to the appealing Vintage 1945 watch collection. The Vintage 1945 Square Perpetual Calendar has all the charm of classical calendar watches, with its beautifully symmetrical displays, elegant 18K gold case, and fine detailing. The slightly broader square profile of this case assists in mitigating any feeling of “display cramping” that can sometimes occur when you have multiple subdials. In all, this is a wonderfully sedate perpetual, that shows off all of its calendar information clearly and with a lot of style. For a stylish dress watch with a major complication, this one would rank very high.Â
A plus for those who are captivated by all things mechanical, is the Girard-Perregaux in-house movement which is equipped with the new Microvar free-sprung balance system. A big highlight of the brand’s debuts for the 2008 year, the Microvar should allow exceptional stability of the rate, as well as a great latitude for fine-tuning by a skilled watchmaker.  This is the kind of fine detail that is fully in keeping with the rich history of Girard-Perregaux.
