When I think of Panerai watches, the first thing that tends to come to mind is a massive steel case, a black dial, and and a thick calfskin or rubber strap.  While I know there is a lot of variety within the sporty themes that have come to define this wildly popular luxury watch brand, this to me is the defining image of Panerai, dating back to its Italian naval roots in the early 20th century.  It is for this reason, that I tend to take a shine to models which diverge from this scheme–no matter how enduringly appealing this popular scheme may be.
