The Omega Seamaster 300M GMT watch gets high marks as one of the best, most durable and functional of all the timepieces which possess multiple timezone capabilities. With its independently adjustable 12-hour hand, keeping up with changes to local time is is as easy as unscrewing the crown, and turning the crown forwards or backwards to move the hand as many hours backward or forward as you require. Meanwhile, a second timezone (such as your own timezone, or UTC) can be read via the red 24-hour hand and the 24-hour rotatable bezel.
Need a temporary third timezone? Easily handled–simply rotate the bezel and you can get this done as well. Reading the dial in the dark is extremely easy, thanks to extremely bold Superluminova applications on hour figures and hands; in fact, if its been charged under a quick exposure to a light source, the lume is so bright
that you can use this dial as an impromptu flashlight! Not merely functional, this Omega watch is extremely resistant to the elements. While it’s bi-directional bezel technically removes it from the category of a true dive watch, its water resistance rating is more than adequate for this purpose; in fact, water resistance, at 300 meters, is the same as the Seamaster Diver Chronometer. For the adventurer who needs an all around luxury watch which has style and performance in equal measures, this Omega watch is extremely hard to beat. Its most direct competition is the time-proven Rolex GMT-Master II, which has been very popular amongst watch enthusiasts (including yours truly), especially with the recent Ref. 116710 “upgrades” which include a bezel crafted from ceramic.
Some will point out that the Rolex has certain horological bragging points the Omega does not, including an in-house movement, and a Breguet hairspring. While this may be so, I would also point out that this does not detract from the excellence of Omega’s modified ETA caliber; like the Rolex movement, it is a COSC-certified chronometer. Ultimately, the bottom line is this: the Omega Seamaster 300M GMT watch has all the functionality that the Rolex GMT-Master II does, at a considerably lower asking price. This makes it an outstanding value, as well as a handsome and finely executed timepiece.
