Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921–A Most Charming Time Machine

The just-announced Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 is one of the most charming (and pleasingly eccentric) dress timepieces I have encountered in some time. A surprisingly faithful reinterpretation of an historical wristwatch which Vacheron Constantin introduced in the early 20th century, the “Historiques American 1921″ abounds with exquisite details. The dial is a superb example of this. Its satin-finished surface has a texture like an eggshell, which provides the perfect canvas for the delightful Breguet-style hands and hour markers. The thin, elegant lugs take one back to the early days of the wristwatch, when pocket watches were basically converted for wrist usage by thin soldered pieces of metal to hold a strap at both sides. The presentation of this pink gold watch is so classical that the counterpoint provided by the expressively off-kilter time display and winding crown becomes that much more alluring.
This Vacheron Constantin watch is one I could be delighted with for many decades–it has the classicism to always be beautiful, has a fascinating link to a point in history, and on top of that, still manages to be distinctive and unusual. You can’t ask for much more than that in an heirloom-quality watch. Well…there is one other thing that absolutely puts the frosting on the cake: turn the Historiques American 1921 over and you will find a lovely Vacheron Constantin hand-wound movement whose traditional finishing and quality has earned it the Hallmark of Geneva (Geneva Seal).
