Among wristwatches with the vaunted tourbillon complication–and there are quite a few these days–none ascend to higher reaches of horological high art than those of Greubel Forsey. The creations of these masters merge mind-blowing mechanical ingenuity and unsurpassed haute de gamme finishing with skill that is scarcely equaled–let alone surpassed. I’ve been mesmerized by their work since the Double Tourbillon 30° debuted, following each new Invention with the awe of an infant opening its eyes for the first time. Continue Reading… »

I’m not the sort of person who gets his jollies from keeping up with what celebrities are wearing, doing, or thinking. However, because I love watches, I do tend to notice what others wear in this category–the famous included. Along with such WIS (”Watch Idiot Savant”) extraordinaires as John Mayer and Eric Clapton, actor Orlando Bloom has proven that when it comes to fine or unusual Rolex timepieces–the obsession is hardcore. Now a few weeks after the announcement of the new Lange Zeitwerk watch I return to looking at it having had the ability to consider its design that was immediately impressive to me. Was this watch simply a good novelty or a lasting design ready to make an impact on future designs from not only A. Lange & Sohne, but other watch makers (where “flattering” mimicry of design often takes place)? Continue Reading… »

Forget shimmering Cotes de Geneve, satiny perlage, or any traditional decorative technique you’ve become familiar with in high-end watchmaking. How about scars, stitches and craters instead? The travails of life undergone by one man is the artistic inspiration behind the eye-catching movement adornments of the pink gold La Resilience Tourbillon watch created by David Rodriguez in partnership with high-end watch brand Confrerie Horlogere. Among classical Patek Philippe watches, it seems that its the Calatrava range that gets the lion share of attention. Of course, with introductions like the ravishing Chronometro Gondolo, purist watch lovers and Patekophiles will surely want to expand their horizons into the brand’s other collections. Even before the current economic climate which apparently has watch companies diving for cover and going “back to basics”, Patek Philippe was debuting watches like this–which define beauty and timeless aesthetics, regardless of trends or the mood on Wall Street. This is the newest luxury way to welcome art deco into your home, and combines the efforts of Swiss master watch maker Jaeger LeCoultre and British mod-retro men’s accessory maker A. Dunhill. While the standard Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos is a mere clock, this Atmos Regulator is a showpiece. A regulator is a clock that has a different dial for the hours and minutes, with the minutes dial being larger. The clock also features a month calendar with day/night indicator, 24 hour indicator, and a chic looking moonphase. The partial skeletonization of the clock face makes for an impressive sight, especially given the symmetrical design of the suspended movement. Continue Reading… »

For aficionados of fine timepieces, its impossible not to admire the expansive strides TAG Heuer has made in the luxury watch arena. Quality and innovation just keep getting better and better, and its very clear the brand wants to be taken seriously as a leading player in the luxury-sport category. An exhibit that grabbed my collar hard at Baselworld 2009 in March was their race car inspired Monaco 24 Concept Chronograph. Continue Reading… »

Beyond its attractive and diverse timepiece collection, Swiss watch brand Milus has captured the attention of luxury connoisseurs with its clever and charming cufflinks that mimic the winding motions of a self-winding movement. The brand takes a bold step in fine artistry–and subtle provocation—with erotic pink gold cufflinks that depict a Kama Sutra position in a combination of cloisonne and champleve enamel. “Movement”, indeed! In the shifting landscape of luxury goods, customers are thinking hard about their purchasing decisions, and brands are rethinking aspects of design and style. Affordability is a major theme, and along with this, customers are demanding designs which offer intangible values such as timelessness, sentimentality and a deeper meaning. While some brands struggle to meet these new challenges, Gurhan is confidently displaying a wealth of attractive new designs which meet the needs of the new luxury goods consumer. Continue Reading… »
