Watch Collecting: A Perspective From One Who Tried, And Failed

Watch collecting is an interesting pursuit, and can mean very different things to different people.  There is no “right answer”–only what works for that individual.  Some people enjoy a rotation of 3-10 watches, happily going to the safety deposit bank or the safe to pull stuff off the winder.  Others keep a few timepieces on hand they wear regularly, and leave the others–sometimes many others–wrapped up in plastic for posterity or investment purposes (I’m thinking of the Patek crowd here, particularly)  Then there are the fanatics for vintage Rolex or Panerai limited editions, who enjoy the hyper-minutiae and sharing a latest rare acquisition with their equally obsessed buddies at get-togethers where festivity levels are just slightly less than that of a Roman bacchanalia.   Continue Reading… »

“The Rolex Submariner is a dime a dozen.”  That sometimes-voiced dismissal of the world’s best known dive watch–using dimes or dozens– certainly couldn’t be applied to the personal Ref. 5512 Submariner of tough-guy actor Steve McQueen.  The excellently kept circa-1967 Rolex Sub favored by the King of Cool likely widened a few eyes in the Antiquorum auction room when it sold for a herculean $234,000–a figure some twenty times the pre-sale estimate.  A resonant world record, for sure! Paul Newman Gave Star Power To The Rolex Daytona Watch

With the passage of Paul Newman, it’s difficult for anyone “into” watches to not think at least a bit about the mythical association between the great actor and the coveted vintage Rolex Daytonas, such as the Ref. 6241 and the 6263. According to Rolex authority John Brozek, there is much controversy over which so-called “exotic dial” Daytona Newman actually wore, where he first appeared wearing it (i.e. the 1969 film “Winning”), and just how collectors came to connect this timepiece so much with the man. However, this much was certainly clear: Mr. Newman enjoyed wearing the Rolex Daytona watch. Beginning with a black-dialed example with contrasting white registers given to him by wife Joanne Woodward in 1972, Newman was often seen over the decades with some form of this Rolex classic on his wrist–usually upon a military-type “Bund” leather strap.
