A diamond-set skull and crossbones proved to be one of the money-getting standouts at September’s recent Only Watch 2009 charity auction. I’m referring, of course, to the extravagant BR 01 Instrument One which luxury sports watch maker Bell & Ross produced just for this event (and the only such watch ever to be made). While quite a departure from the sober theme of the standard-production BR01 Airborne, and a bit of an oddity amongst the numerous high complication watches which made up the lion’s share of Only Watch 2009 entries, a winning bid of 34,000 Euros proved that “vive le difference” is alive and well! A beautiful addition to the Ulysse Nardin Lady Diver watch collection is the Lady Diver Starry Night. Few of the dreamy names given to luxury wristwatches are as apt as this one, and when you look at the dial, it’s very clear indeed–just like a beautiful night sky! In this instance, the “sky” is soleil-finished metal or white mother of pearl dial and the twinkling stars are 27 round brilliant diamonds set in a free-form pattern all around it. The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronometer is a luxury timepiece that is really growing on me. While it’s always been a good watch that has seen a lot of popularity among Omega fans, this year represents a new high point for the Aqua Terra–and people are talking about it. What’s the reason, you ask? A very sharp yet modest redesign that wraps itself around Omega’s sensational in-house 8500 caliber movement. Continue Reading… »

What do you get when you squeeze two world class male swimmers on a tiny white Vespa? A decidedly strange photo op for one of the world’s most incredible dive watches! Omega’s super-impressive Seamaster Professional Ploprof 1200M watch, which I blogged about back in March (click here for the details), showed up on the wrists of a beaming Michael Phelps and Massimiliano Rosolino, as the two Omega ambassadors hammed it up in matching white helmets for the press at the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome. With chronograph watches having the popularity that they do among timepiece aficionados, it can be a challenge for a watch brand to come up with a concept that catches the eye and stands out amongst the crowd. That said, I think the small house of Paul Picot in Le Noirmont, Switzerland has succeeded in doing just that with their colorful and technically interesting Technograph Discotime watch. It’s neat to see what Jaquet Droz has done with ceramics. While most brands (Hublot and IWC, for example) have gone the purely sports-based route when using this fascinating and somewhat Darth Vader-esque material, Jaquet Droz has held to their own successful theme of individualistic elegance. My favorite of JD’s ceramic cased watches is the just-announced Quantieme Perpetuel Ceramique, which has to be one of the most strikingly original complicated dress watches ever created. With authenticity and substance becoming ever more important in the messages that watch companies seek to convey to their customers, exclusive seals promising performance, finishing standards, and more are multiplying rapidly. From Bedat & Co with their AOSC certificate covering the Swiss origin of parts and assembly, to Patek Philippe, which created waves at Baselworld 2009 with their announcement that the Poincon de Geneve (Geneva Seal) is being ditched for a new, and more demanding in-house Patek Philippe Seal, its clear that brands want to differentiate themselves from their competition more than ever. There’s few superlatively fine luxury watches you can purchase today that better capture the antiquarian delight of watch mechanics than those in Breguet’s Tradition collection. Its all subjective of course, but when I see these timepieces–for example the Tradition Handwound–I feel I’ve discovered a pleasant time-warp to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s 19th century Paris workshop, where the fabled “Marie Antoinette”, and other singular masterpieces of the watchmaking craft took form. Among wristwatches with the vaunted tourbillon complication–and there are quite a few these days–none ascend to higher reaches of horological high art than those of Greubel Forsey. The creations of these masters merge mind-blowing mechanical ingenuity and unsurpassed haute de gamme finishing with skill that is scarcely equaled–let alone surpassed. I’ve been mesmerized by their work since the Double Tourbillon 30° debuted, following each new Invention with the awe of an infant opening its eyes for the first time. Continue Reading… »

For aficionados of fine timepieces, its impossible not to admire the expansive strides TAG Heuer has made in the luxury watch arena. Quality and innovation just keep getting better and better, and its very clear the brand wants to be taken seriously as a leading player in the luxury-sport category. An exhibit that grabbed my collar hard at Baselworld 2009 in March was their race car inspired Monaco 24 Concept Chronograph. Continue Reading… »
