“The Rolex Submariner is a dime a dozen.” That sometimes-voiced dismissal of the world’s best known dive watch–using dimes or dozens– certainly couldn’t be applied to the personal Ref. 5512 Submariner of tough-guy actor Steve McQueen. The excellently kept circa-1967 Rolex Sub favored by the King of Cool likely widened a few eyes in the Antiquorum auction room when it sold for a herculean $234,000–a figure some twenty times the pre-sale estimate. For those fascinated by the human stories that inevitably accompany watches, Antiquorum’s March 2009 sale is sure to be an event of interest. Among the many items on the block include a Zenith pocket watch owned by Mahatma Gandhi, a 14K gold Nastrix wristwatch that was a favorite of John F. Kennedy, and a gold Patek Philippe Ref. 1516 watch that mobster Lucky Luciano gifted in 1957 to Joseph Bonanno, Sr. of the infamous Bonanno crime family.
