No matter what their preferred watch brands may be, devotees of sports watches all seem united when it comes to the issue of dial design. Make ‘em big, make ‘em bold, and oh yes–make sure there’s plenty of luminous applications that keep a brilliant glow for more than just a few minutes. With their rugged, virtually indestructible construction, legible no-B.S. dials and alluring size and mass, dive watches are some of the coolest sports timepieces out there. And among comparative newcomers to the scene, few have the presence and pleasing originality of the Bell & Ross BR 02 1000M. While I know it won’t unseat such smashingly popular classics as the Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster, there’s no question this head-turner is a real option for those wanting to escape the established dive watch paradigm. “The Rolex Submariner is a dime a dozen.” That sometimes-voiced dismissal of the world’s best known dive watch–using dimes or dozens– certainly couldn’t be applied to the personal Ref. 5512 Submariner of tough-guy actor Steve McQueen. The excellently kept circa-1967 Rolex Sub favored by the King of Cool likely widened a few eyes in the Antiquorum auction room when it sold for a herculean $234,000–a figure some twenty times the pre-sale estimate.
