Back in November of 2008, I shared a few thoughts on the Corum Romvlvs Perpetual Calendar watch, praising its elegant design and fine complication. I concluded the blog by opining that it would be an excellent platform for other prestigious complications at a later date. Happily, nearly a year later Corum has done just that and revealed a stunning new Romvlvs watch starring that most famous complication of all: the tourbillon. Continue Reading… »

Among classic high luxury dress watches, few are more refined and beautiful than the Jules Audemars manual winding by Audemars Piguet. From the sublime perfection of the perfectly sculptured brushed case in 18K white or pink gold, to the lovely dials with their leaf shaped hands, every detail radiates quality–heirloom quality. While the men’s models are certainly wearable for many women and look great on them, the ladies have some exquisite choices exclusively for them, in this collection. Possessing the same über-classical design, but in smaller 29mm format, these timepieces house hand-wound mechanical movements that are among the finest available in the world of high-end watchmaking. There’s nothing like a noble cause to stimulate the creativity of luxury watch brands. I’m making reference, of course, to the annual Only Watch auction, which stars some exceptional and one-off timepieces from a spectrum of Switzerland’s finest–all of which are going to be auctioned off next month for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research. One of the most interesting to me from this year’s crop–at least in the sport-themed genre–comes from Blancpain. Continue Reading… »

Among devotees of Gerald Genta’s most enduring watch designs, the original ultra-thin Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch–often affectionately called “the Jumbo”–is perhaps the most revered. I can tell you that’s its always been one of my watch grails, which I see as perhaps the ultimate all-round luxury timepiece. The recent addition of pink gold as a metal choice has produced what is-in my humble opinion-the most opulent interpretation of Audemars Piguet’s enduring and unmistakable high luxury sports watch. Watch collecting is an interesting pursuit, and can mean very different things to different people. There is no “right answer”–only what works for that individual. Some people enjoy a rotation of 3-10 watches, happily going to the safety deposit bank or the safe to pull stuff off the winder. Others keep a few timepieces on hand they wear regularly, and leave the others–sometimes many others–wrapped up in plastic for posterity or investment purposes (I’m thinking of the Patek crowd here, particularly) Then there are the fanatics for vintage Rolex or Panerai limited editions, who enjoy the hyper-minutiae and sharing a latest rare acquisition with their equally obsessed buddies at get-togethers where festivity levels are just slightly less than that of a Roman bacchanalia. It’s neat to see what Jaquet Droz has done with ceramics. While most brands (Hublot and IWC, for example) have gone the purely sports-based route when using this fascinating and somewhat Darth Vader-esque material, Jaquet Droz has held to their own successful theme of individualistic elegance. My favorite of JD’s ceramic cased watches is the just-announced Quantieme Perpetuel Ceramique, which has to be one of the most strikingly original complicated dress watches ever created. It’s always interesting to follow the appearance of exceptional vintage Patek Philippe watches at the various auction houses. One of the latest is from Bonhams, which has announced the upcoming (June 10th) sale of a yellow gold Patek Philippe chronograph with perpetual calendar and moon phases. This model, the Ref. 2499, is interesting because despite its comparatively long production run of more than 35 years, only 349 pieces are known to exist. Continue Reading… »

With authenticity and substance becoming ever more important in the messages that watch companies seek to convey to their customers, exclusive seals promising performance, finishing standards, and more are multiplying rapidly. From Bedat & Co with their AOSC certificate covering the Swiss origin of parts and assembly, to Patek Philippe, which created waves at Baselworld 2009 with their announcement that the Poincon de Geneve (Geneva Seal) is being ditched for a new, and more demanding in-house Patek Philippe Seal, its clear that brands want to differentiate themselves from their competition more than ever. There’s few superlatively fine luxury watches you can purchase today that better capture the antiquarian delight of watch mechanics than those in Breguet’s Tradition collection. Its all subjective of course, but when I see these timepieces–for example the Tradition Handwound–I feel I’ve discovered a pleasant time-warp to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s 19th century Paris workshop, where the fabled “Marie Antoinette”, and other singular masterpieces of the watchmaking craft took form. Among wristwatches with the vaunted tourbillon complication–and there are quite a few these days–none ascend to higher reaches of horological high art than those of Greubel Forsey. The creations of these masters merge mind-blowing mechanical ingenuity and unsurpassed haute de gamme finishing with skill that is scarcely equaled–let alone surpassed. I’ve been mesmerized by their work since the Double Tourbillon 30° debuted, following each new Invention with the awe of an infant opening its eyes for the first time. Continue Reading… »
