An interesting new Seamaster Professional Planet Ocean watch is in the offing from Omega. According to preliminary sources, the timepiece features a bezel in which the graduated ring is crafted from a specialized ceramic-metal hybrid material described as “Liquidmetal”. Apparently composed of titanium, copper, nickel and beryllium in addition to significant amounts of zirconium oxide, the Liquidmetal bezel has a very attractive and rich appearance, combined with superior shatterproof qualities and excellent resistance to environmental factors–superior traits indeed for a timepiece that is both a luxury object, and an instrument with true capabilities for diving and sports use. A beautiful addition to the Ulysse Nardin Lady Diver watch collection is the Lady Diver Starry Night. Few of the dreamy names given to luxury wristwatches are as apt as this one, and when you look at the dial, it’s very clear indeed–just like a beautiful night sky! In this instance, the “sky” is soleil-finished metal or white mother of pearl dial and the twinkling stars are 27 round brilliant diamonds set in a free-form pattern all around it. The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronometer is a luxury timepiece that is really growing on me. While it’s always been a good watch that has seen a lot of popularity among Omega fans, this year represents a new high point for the Aqua Terra–and people are talking about it. What’s the reason, you ask? A very sharp yet modest redesign that wraps itself around Omega’s sensational in-house 8500 caliber movement. Continue Reading… »

Watch collecting is an interesting pursuit, and can mean very different things to different people. There is no “right answer”–only what works for that individual. Some people enjoy a rotation of 3-10 watches, happily going to the safety deposit bank or the safe to pull stuff off the winder. Others keep a few timepieces on hand they wear regularly, and leave the others–sometimes many others–wrapped up in plastic for posterity or investment purposes (I’m thinking of the Patek crowd here, particularly) Then there are the fanatics for vintage Rolex or Panerai limited editions, who enjoy the hyper-minutiae and sharing a latest rare acquisition with their equally obsessed buddies at get-togethers where festivity levels are just slightly less than that of a Roman bacchanalia. It’s always interesting to follow the appearance of exceptional vintage Patek Philippe watches at the various auction houses. One of the latest is from Bonhams, which has announced the upcoming (June 10th) sale of a yellow gold Patek Philippe chronograph with perpetual calendar and moon phases. This model, the Ref. 2499, is interesting because despite its comparatively long production run of more than 35 years, only 349 pieces are known to exist. Continue Reading… »
