The understatement and elegance which characterizes the watchmaking philosophy of Patek Philippe is perhaps nowhere better exemplified than in the exquisite Ref. 5101P 10-Day Tourbillon. This stately platinum masterpiece debuted in 2003 and presented an exclusive form movement with a discreet tourbillon escapement, and two mainspring barrels for an exceptional power reserve. In 2009, Patek Philippe re-introduces this coveted reference in 18-karat rose gold.
The Patek Philippe 5101R 10-Day Tourbillon watch, like its platinum 5101P counterpart, features a curved rectangular case inspired by the Art Deco 1920s and 1930s. Characterized by strikingly sculpted three-tiered flanks, this stately form measures 51.70 x 29.60mm; its refined finish and complex design is accentuated by a convex sapphire crystal which Patek Philippe has ground parallel on both sides to preclude optical distortion. Complementing these distinguished features is a silvery gray dial in 18-karat gold, with contrasting small seconds and power reserve subdials; the polished leaf hands and Breguet numerals are crafted from rose gold.
A sapphire crystal exhibition caseback secured with four screws reveals the manufacture Patek Philippe 28-20/222 caliber. In the manner of all Patek Philippe movements with a tourbillon, it has earned a chronometer certificate from the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC). One hundred turns of the winding crown stoke the two spring barrels with enough energy to accurately animate the timepiece for the full ten day autonomy; a coupling system equipped with a slipping bridle spring on barrel number one prevents excessive mainspring tightening. The intricate tourbillon escapement, made up of 72 individual parts gleams with the unmistakable evidence of extensive hand finishing, as do the bridges, which display Cotes de Geneve and anglage. Additional aspects of traditional high watchmaking artistry include polished screws, chamfered jewel settings, and six jewels set in gold chatons. The freely sprung Gyromax balance wheel is equipped with a Breguet overcoil hairspring, and beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour.
A hand-stitched strap in crocodile leather and an 18-karat rose gold ardillon buckle complete the Patek Philippe 5101R 10-Day Tourbillon watch. The timepiece is water resistant to 30 meters.
