Breguet Classique Ref. 5967 Watch With Exclusive Art Deco Damier Engraving
By Ariel Adams for ViaLuxe.com

Breguet is the modern Swiss master of guilloche machine engraving. The technique is how each of their watches gets the beautiful patterns and textures engraved on the dial. Most of the machines used for this are over 100 years old or made special by the watch manufacture themselves. The new Breguet Classique Ref. 5967 utilizes a brand new guilloche pattern developed by Breguet. To be fair, the pattern is not new, it has been used for a long time in other types of art such as carpentry, architecture, and art. Though here is it has been adopted in a novel manner for use with metal guilloche engraving. Breguet calls the pattern Art Deco Damier. They seem to think it looks like a three-dimensional chess board, but you can evoke your own interpretation of the stacked cubic design.

The Ref. 5967 watch will be 41mm wide in yellow gold (rare these days expect perhaps for Breguet) or white gold, and feature a movement not even meant for a watch. Inside is a Frederic Piguet caliber 506.2 manually wound pocket watch movement. The timepiece features an exhibition caseback for admiring the movement. The Art Deco Damier pattern on the dial gives the classic looking watch a more modern look, although I anticipate that the basic pattern is easily 200 years old itself. The watch does away with a seconds hand, and as always, the beautiful blued steel pomme hands are precisely the right length for the case. Quite a delicacy of a timepiece for between $16,400 - $17,300 starting Fall 2009.
