Patravi Chronograde. A world first from Carl F. Bucherer with 6 useful functions and a retrograde hour display for the Chronograph.
Chronograph, flyback function, large date, annual calendar, power reserve indication and retrograde hours totalizator have never featured together in this combination before. This mechanical masterpiece is available exclusively from Carl F. Bucherer. And the Luzern watchmakers, a traditional Swiss company that insists on the most demanding standards, did not make things easy for itself. CEO Thomas Morf and his ambitious team put in over 2 years of work on a product that can rightly claim that its whole is far greater than the sum of its individual functions.
The most important function of this wristwatch is, no doubt, the chronograph with its retrograde hours indicator. After each rotation of the central chronograph hand, the minute totalizator at 9 o’clock moves along one more graduation mark. This is in turn connected via an imposing gearing mechanism to the hours counter between 7 and 8 o’clock, completing its own rotations. The corresponding hand moves downwards through a semicircular scale. When the hours counter reaches the end of its scale, it shoots instantly back to its starting position, in order to start its journey again from this position. This retrograde display distinguishes the PATRAVI Chronograde quite significantly from its run of the mill peers and, as can be easily deduced, also makes its contribution to the name of this exceptional wristwatch.
As if this were not enough, another equally extraordinary function appeals to highly demanding people with little time at their disposal. Pilots in the cockpit, for example, when they are in the landing queue and have to fly round in standard loops. It takes them too long to stop the chrono each time and, before each new circuit, re-zero and start the chrono again from scratch. Knowing this, many decades ago, ingenious watchmakers invented the “flyback” hand function. One press on the push-piece is enough to restart the chronograph directly, without an intermediate stopping operation.
This still does not exhaust the range of functions available with the PATRAVI Chronograde. A glance at the intricately designed dial, and you will notice the large date display, the size of two normal windows. The highly complex mechanical calendar takes into account the variable months with 30 or 31 days. Only at the end of February will an adjustment by the owner be required with the crown, which resets it completely for the next year. Should the watch have to stay in the safe longer than expected, the analogue months indicator helps to reset the annual calendar precisely.
Fully wound, the automatic CFB1902 calibre will run for a reassuring 42 hours non-stop. An ingenious combination of a highlow- ratio and a two-armed hand, arranged on one disc, indicates the current power reserve situation – the unique power reserve indicator was also developed by Carl F. Bucherer.
This leaves “last but not least” the optical elements of the watch. The overall appearance is decidedly masculine. The high-grade steel case has a diameter of 44mm and, thanks to its screweddown back cover and crown, it is water-resistant to a pressure of 5 atmospheres or a depth of 50 m. Safe wearing on the wrist is ensured by a bracelet made either from supple calfskin or robust high-grade steel, fitted with a practical folding clasp. In both cases, aesthetics and wearing comfort are of the highest priority. From every point of view, the PATRAVI Chronograde is a successful masterpiece.
