Gerald Genta Gefica Kilimanjaro Watch
By Adam Keith, Associate Timepiece Editor for ViaLuxe-

Avant garde Swiss watchmaker Gerald Genta, well-known to connoisseurs for its creation of timepieces which merge haute horlogerie craftsmanship with zany or provocative themes, has introduced a limited edition model of its bronze-cased Gefica wristwatch.  This new variation of the Gerald Genta Gefica pays homage to the majesty and dramatic beauty of Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro, while showcasing the famed Gerald Genta specialties of retrograde hands and digital jumping hours.

The Gefica Kilimanjaro timepiece measures 42.5mm, a size well suited to the preferences of contemporary male and female watch connoisseurs alike. The outer edge of the bezel, the lower portion of the caseband and the domed winding crown are all encircled with a distinctive row of titanium beads.  Like the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro herself, the intricate three-dimensional white dial curves inward towards its center.   The dial's upper hemisphere presents the semi-circular scale for the retrograde minutes, below which appears a circular aperture for the jumping hour, presented in red against a white background.  The lower dial sector features the retrograde date scale; as is the situation with minutes every hour, when the last day of the month passes, the hand is released and instantly flies backward to "1".  Mounted at center is a brilliant red hand, which sweeps along the outer scale to indicate seconds.  Presented in brilliant white to evoke the snow-capped visage of Kilimanjaro, the dial offers the exceptional intricacy for which the house of Genta is famed.  Among the numerous fine details are superimposed semi-circular sections with a horizontal line motif, and concave applied scales in bronze for the minute and date indications.

Equally impressive workmanship reveals itself through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback of the Gerald Genta Gefica Kilimanjaro watch.  The self-winding 1004 Calibre movement, based upon a refined Girard-Perregaux base, displays Gerald Genta's characteristic "Potter finish", whose gold color evokes the appearance of exceptional old calibers.  Both bridges and the central rotor bearing the Gerald Genta signature display a fine circular grained pattern.  Bridges also display finely chamfered edges.  Balance frequency is a rapid 28,800 vibrations per hour, and power reserve is approximately 45 hours.

The Gerald Genta Gefica Kilimanjaro timepiece is limited to an edition of 100 pieces.  Each watch is fitted with a curved sapphire crystal, and a hand-sewn strap in white crocodile leather with a black titanium triple-deployant clasp.  Water resistance is rated for 100 meters.
