Henry Dunay Fifty Years of Jewelry Design and Creation
On the heels of the release of his first book, luxury jeweler Henry Dunay promoted his book at the 2008 international Swiss watch and luxury jewelry tradeshow BaselWorld, held in Basel, Switzerland every year. His book titled "Henry Dunay, A Precious Life" is a celebration of his 50 years in the jewelry industry; it sums up his early life and his movement into jewelry as well as features page after page of glossy prints of his jewelry.

Dunay began his lifelong passion for and career in jewelry as an apprentice to a goldsmith at the young age of 14. Early on, his expert skills with the challenging and demanding pave diamond setting shined brightly distinctly separating himself from the pack. His destiny as a master jeweler seemed to show itself. In 1965, he established Henry Dunay Designs, a name which today is internationally recognized for novel jewelry and unique objects of art. The signature Dunay jewelry is characterized by the variety of textures, rare gems, edgy lines and soft curves.

The guiding philosophy of Dunay Designs is that the gem controls the message of the piece. Whereas some artists may create with the idea that he or she controls the final product and the aesthetic, Henry Dunay believes he is an instrument the gem uses. For this reason, at the forefront of the jewelry is the gem with Dunay creating an appropriate and luxurious background in which to highlight the gem.

The classic Dunay jewelry collections include Faceted, Sabi, Sabi and Diamond, Platinum and Gold, 18K and Diamond Timepieces, Medea, Color Me Henry, Praslin and Cynnabar, each of which are named for their overarching theme, texture or precious material. "Henry Dunay is a legend in our lifetime. He has an innate sense of rhythm that is reflected in his jewelry designs," says Joyce Jonas, jewelry professor and president of the Society of Jewelry Historians. She makes frequent reference to the Dunay Sabi style - a hand-textured finish that blends 18k gold in a soft, undulating pattern - in her workshops and lectures.

Over the course of his 50 year involvement in the jewelry industry, he has been the recipient of 50 national and international awards and accolades.

While his career started and has been primarily focused on jewelry, in recent years Dunay has expanded his collection to include sculptures, collectibles, accessories, luxury watches, and his own fragrance called "Sabi" - his "liquid jewel" - a top seller at Neiman Marcus.

Each Dunay piece is finished with the Dunay heart logo - a proud proclamation of his love for his work and his customers.
