The record-setting flight of "Jetman" Yves Rossy across the English Channel on September 26th was marked by the participation of Swiss watch brand Hublot, who sponsored the intrepid undertaking of the professional pilot. Known variously as "Rocket Man", "Fusion Man", and "Jet Man" by fans, Rossy captured the attention of the world with his remarkable mode of transportation--a single, jet-propelled wing that gives him the airborne appearance of a high-tech bird.
During his flight from Calais to Dover, Rossy covered a distance of 7.8 miles (35 kilometers) at an average speed of 120 miles per hour (200 kph). The route Rossy flew matched that taken by pioneering 20th century aviator Louis Bleriot, who in 1909 became the first person to cross the English Channel in an aircraft.
Hublot has been affiliated with Rossy, a pilot for Swiss International airlines, since 2007. What is Jetman's next goal, after such a spectacular debut? A flight over the Grand Canyon in 2009!
