IWC And The Plastic Bottle Boat
By Ariel Adams for ViaLuxe.com

IWC is sponsoring the voyage of the “Plastiki,” a unique boat constructed entirely of plastic bottles meant to sail across the Pacific Ocean this summer from San Francisco to Sydney. The journey is part of a publicity event to raise awareness about environmentalism and communicate how waste can be made useful - as the boat is made of recycled plastic bottles. The Plastiki is named after the famed Kon-Tiki ship of the mid 20th century and will be a 60 foot long catamaran style boat that will house the voyage leader David de Rothschild, and a small hand-picked crew.

In addition to this being the first ship of its kind, the voyage will also see a new limited edition IWC Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth Edition “Adventure Ecology” watch. It is a silly long title for an admirable watch. The timepiece, based on the popular line of durable IWC Ingenieur watches, will be made in a totally carbon-neutral manner and will have a special engraving on the back to commemorate the voyage of the Plastiki. The watch will be in steel and 46mm wide with an IWC in-house 80110 calibre automatic movement. Plastiki leader David de Rothschild will sport one of these IWC Adventure Ecology watches during the voyage.

Other than proving that a plastic bottle built boat can successfully survive the distance from California to Australia, there is no specific mission other than to bring certain environmental realities to the public’s attention. As such, you can visit www.theplastiki.com at anytime during the voyage to become a virtual member of the crew and observe the progress of the Plastiki as well as learn about mission’s core principles. IWC is a large sponsor of the Plastiki showing its continued support of environmentally sound business practices and the development of techniques that can properly reuse and reduce waste products emitted by modern industrialization. Plus, fine watch makers are slowly adopting a series of increasing carbon neutral programs to help eliminate any environmental effects of timepiece production.
