Jaquet Droz Watch Features In MAD Museum Industrial Ceramics Exhibition

By Adam Keith, Associate Timepiece Editor for ViaLuxe-

The Jaquet Droz Grand Seconde Ceramique watch is part of an ongoing exhibition entitled "Object Factory: The Art of Industrial Ceramics", held at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York, New York.  The event draws attention to the numerous ways in which ceramic has become part of everyday life, from appliances and digital electronics to cutlery, and of course, watchmaking.

"The limitless potential of ceramics--a medium that has been in use for millennia--is underscored by its use in such innovative ways as the housing of watches like the Grande Second Ceramique created by the renowned Jaquet Droz Manufacture," said MAD Museum's chief curator David McFadden.

Of the diverse range of objects on display, Jaquet Droz's sublime Grande Second Ceramique has the distinction of being the sole representative of ceramic applications in horology.  Sharing the traditional enamel dial which is a delightful signature of many Jaquet Droz models, the Grande Second Ceramique presents a captivating black case manufactured from breathtakingly minute particles of zirconium powder.  The powder is formed into a highly resilient case through a state of the art molding process.

The Object Factory exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design will be held through September 13, 2009.
