SIHH 2010: Panerai Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica Watch
A technical opus by Officine Panerai being presented at the 2010 SIHH exhibition in Geneva is the new Ref. PAM00348 Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica watch. A formidable creation for both its complex haute horlogerie mechanism and environmentally-resistant zirconium oxide ceramic case, this 48mm timepiece presents a strikingly original interpretation of the skeleton watch: while decidedly contemporary, it preserves the fascination of a complicated mechanical movement that can be viewed all the way through with nearly perfect clarity.

Standing out against the stealthy black finish of the case is the honeycomb-pattern dial through which the viewer can clearly glimpse the important structures of the mechanism, chiefly the mainspring barrels with their tightly coiled contents, and the tourbillon carriage that rotates on its axis bearing the complex escapement assembly. The presence of two small hands at 9 and 3 o'clock show continuous small seconds and the AM/PM indication, respectively. While the tan hour markers at the peripheral section of the dial are not luminous, the central hour and minutes hands feature bold Superluminova applications and are extremely legible in low light, as is the tip of the additional (third) centralized hand which indicates a second time zone. The dial is protected by a gently curved sapphire crystal that features anti-reflective coating on both sides to keep glare at an absolute minimum.

Animating the Panerai Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica timepiece is an in-house Panerai manually wound movement. Designated the P2005/S, it brings together 277 individual parts 31 jewels. Among the fascinating technical features of this caliber are a system of three mainspring barrels that grant a cumulative power reserve total of six days, and a tourbillon carriage that revolves once every two minutes; this rotation interval stands in contrast to the majority of tourbillons, which feature carriages with a 60-second rotation. The status of the power reserve can be viewed through the sapphire exhibition caseback, where among the structure of blackened bridges is a semi-circular scale with an accompanying indicator hand.

Officine Panerai will produce 30 individually numbered examples of the Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica watch, each being fitted with a tan leather strap and a blackened stainless steel buckle. The reference lives up to the sporting characteristics established by other Panerai Radiomir timepieces, and is water resistant to 100 meters. The truncated screw-down winding crown features knurling for a secure grip, and displays the Panerai logo on its cap.
