Omega Speedmaster Solar Impulse HB-SIA Watch

This watch can be defined as the “modern Omega Speedmaster.” Omega took the traditional look and dial layout of the Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch, updated it a bit, put it in a titanium case, added a carbon fiber dial, put in an automatic, column wheel chronograph and GMT-hand mechanical movement (that is Chronometer certified), fitted it with a sapphire crystal, and dedicated it to an innovative aircraft. Did Omega need to do that last part? No, but it helps with timepiece model identity, especially since there are so many Speedmaster watches out there. More classy to say, “Omega Speedmaster Solar Impulse,” rather than, “that titanium Omega Speedmaster,” or worse, “the Omega 321.90.44.52.01.001.” The Solar Impulse HB-SIA is an interesting plane because it uses electrical engine propellers that are solar powered. The plane has a large array of solar panels as well as lithium ion batteries that can store energy for night flight. The project is to create a plane that can fly all day, and all night. Omega is a sponsor of the Solar Impulse project, which the Speedmaster Solar Impulse watch is meant to recognize – and the plane should be ready for flight tests soon.

For some people this is the most desirable Omega Speedmaster watch ever – given its connection with the classic look and all the updated modern features. The dial is very well laid out with the addition of the GMT hand being barely intrusive. An excellent flight watch, and a stellar addition to the Speedmaster watch lineup.
