For Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer, a high point of 2008 was the world's first Formula 1 night race held in Singapore. To mark the debut of that anticipated event, TAG Heuer unveiled a limited edition version of its Grand Carrera Calibre 8, a self-winding timepiece with a large date and a rotating indicator for elapsed seconds. With news that Singapore will again hold a night race for 2009, this watch brand so associated with sports timing again steps forward to offer another thematic, limited edition timepiece with styling cues uniquely attuned to the design of the F1 night race track.
“The launch of the limited edition TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 last year was a roaring success. Not only were the 150 pieces sold out within a mere 9 days, it was also auctioned off at the M.I.L.K. Charity Dinner Auction at a tag of $45,000," stated TAG Heuer's dynamic President and CEO Jean-Christophe Babin.
Mr. Babin continued, "TAG Heuer has always had a rich heritage involving motor racing and Formula One; it is indeed exciting to see that Singapore is once again hosting this amazing event. It is also an honor for TAG Heuer to be involved in this spectacular race, joining in the much anticipated excitement and celebration."
2009's thematic night racing watch is the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day Date Chronograph, which in this variation will be produced in a series of just 250 pieces. Featuring classical lines inspired by the 1950's-era race car legends, and the historical Panamericana Mexico Road Race of the same age, this model presents a 43mm case crafted from polished and brushed stainless steel. The finely detailed black dial with its countersunk hour and minute totalizers displays a striking checkered pattern evocative of carbon fiber. The subtle green accents appearing on the central chronograph hand, the chronograph start/stop button, the tachymeter bezel, and the stitching of the crocodile strap match the glowing borders of the F1 night racing track. Joining the watch to its owner is a stainless steel deployant clasp with a push-button security release.
TAG Heuer's self-winding Calibre 16 movement uses as its base the legendary Valjoux 7750, without question one of the most rugged and precise chronograph calibers ever produced. Equipped with rapidly adjustable indications for both the date and day, the movement also features a 30-minute and 12-hour totalizer in addition to continuously running small seconds. The tachymeter scale on the black anodized bezel ring permits a wide range of speed and rate calculations, enhancing the versatility of the chronograph function. Power reserve of the Calibre 16 movement is approximately 48 hours, and balance frequency is 28,800 vibrations per hour, a rate which allows timing sequences to be carried out with 1/8th second precision. The addition of a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback allows a view into this robust mechanical movement with a central winding rotor featuring the TAG Heuer brand insignia.
A TAG Heuer press release states the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day Date Chronograph Singapore Limited Edition watch will carry a suggested retail price of $6,500. Availability is not restricted to Singapore, however, and the timepiece will be offered for sale at TAG Heuer retailers and boutiques throughout the world.
